IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Please don’t call SCFA about stray animals or surrendering your pets. We support the shelter and are not a rescue group. If you have to surrender an animal or have problems with strays, please call the Township shelter directly at 732 873-2500 ext. 255. Make sure you leave a clear message and a number where your call can be returned. If you have an emergency, call the police department.
Please know that this is a municipal facility -the shelter only takes animals from Franklin Township.
To surrender a pet to the shelter:
- You must be a resident of Franklin Township and have proof of residency
- Surrenders are not done on weekend. Call the shelter at 732 873-2500 ext. 255 to make an appointment to bring in your animal. The staff will discuss your pet to determine if it can be adopted to new owners and what type of home will be appropriate.
- All animals must be up-to-date with their shots. Bring proof from your vet or rabies clinic.
- There is a small surrender fee. Please check with the shelter staff for the amount.
Saving a stray:
- If you can safely catch the animal and are a Franklin Township resident you can bring the animal to the shelter. Please bring proof of residency. Please use caution - your safety is your first concern. Be sure to tell the staff if anyone is scratched or bitten.
- If you cannot catch the animal and it is not in immediate danger, please call the shelter staff for advice and assistance.
- If the animal is sick, injured or otherwise in danger, please call the police to request immediate assistance.
- No fee is charged for bringing in stray.
- If possible -call in advance of coming in. Call the shelter at 732 873-2500 ext 255 to confirm the shelter is open. Due to cut-backs in the township, hours when the facility is open to the public have been reduced. Also, the shelter may have to close unexpectedly if the staff has to go on a call. Your patience and understanding is appreciated.
- Wild animals live in Franklin Township - the shelter does not trap or relocate healthy wild animals from your property. Do not call unless the wild animal is ill or demonstrating unusual behavior.
